Sorry, but true. They still rely on excellent acting and writing to carry the show, instead of special effects doing the entire job A Ghoulish Ghost Story.

I have to say, I ordered this movie as I really love a great ghost story. The Secrets of Crickley Hall really caught my attention right from the beginning.

This is not a "horror" story so all you fans or gore may not be interested in a stroy like this. This is a story of the past meeting up on the same plane as the present.

A story of a group of children in the 's living in an orphanage tormented by their benefactor sort of speak. A woman in the present suffers a loss and her family take her away to Crickley Hall where she starts to hear a voice whom she believes she recognizes no spoiler alerts.

Her daughters start to see and sense things and the past begins to mesh with the present. I literally could not stop watching this movie, I watched the entire minutes in one sitting.

It grabbed me from start to finish. I loved the twist and the entire story line A must see for those who like "ghost" stories with heart and soul.

Thought this was a really good movie. Tom Ellis plays the father in this. He's best known for playing Lucifer on the hit show "Lucifer" But the movie kept my interest all the way to the end.

I like Ghost movies anyway. Very good' a young couple lose their little boy, while she falls asleep at the park, but she wasn't asleep for very long The tale takes place in two time eras; the present, and the time during WWII.

The Hall is haunted by the past residents, who ran a war-time orphanage. The mom keeps hearing her lost son The tv mini series was good.

More a or less a 3 hour movie with a intermission every hour. Watched straight through, to good to stop. My only regret is I bought it used, and it froze in several spots, and I had to return it.

Would of watched it again down the road. Not your normal cold slow moving British movie, surprises unfold throughout the final third.

This is a three hour mini-series and I had planned on watching one a night but after the first part I had to watch the whole movie.

I really enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good contemporary British mystery.

Especially liked the way historic flashbacks were incorporated into the present day setting. One of the reasons I ordered this was because of the leading actress, who plays on the British detective series Scott and Bailey.

Also recognized one of the male actors from his role in The Seventh Sign. The small children in the film were adorable. This movie had me sitting on the edge of my seat; however, there were a few things I would have changed, the ending being one of them.

See for yourself. This was a solid supernatural miniseries with a great mystery, haunted house and ghostly elements.

It didn't feel drawn out - like similar shows. The acting was terrific and I love how the writers wove details of the past and present to create a tale that connects generations to a murder.

There are some disturbing plot lines involving violence against children. If you cannot stomach that - even in historical context - don't watch this.

See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. I thought that it was a good adaption overall - the best and most chilling episode being the first one, in my opinion.

However, as it progressed, it began to deviate from the source material - slightly at first and then wildly towards the end.

Without spoiling it for everyone, the end isn't even remotely like the book's ending and is far too sickly sweet.

Having said that, the performances brilliant. Sarah Smart brings a sultry seductiveness to the role of Magda Cribben in a way not portrayed in the book, and it works really well.

Olivia Cook also shines in her role of trainee teacher Nancy Linnet, and her desperate and ultimately futile struggle to expose Augustus Cribben as the bullying; abusive tyrant that he is will have you glued to the screen.

Overall, I would say that it's worth checking out if you're a fan of haunted house stories.

Fans of the book may be irritated by the source material deviations, though. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Please try again. A lot of supernatural with modern life It had my blood boiling how the poor "past" children was treated I' love to to take that vile cane to the orphanage owners Vicars wrapped up in what they wanted to see NOT what happening A modern Mother so debilitated by grief and guilt with a useless none supporting husband I thought she'd loose the plot completely So many secrets really sad how long the guy waited for his love only to find her remains in the well Over all a VERY depressing movie The only happy outcome the dear little boy who bore the brunt of cruelty survived had a family of his own and lived to old age.

Well, that's three hours of my life I'm never going to get back again! Normally I'd watch Suranne Jones even if she were only reading out the telephone directory, especially if she's co-starring with Sarah Smart.

Written by L. The Secret of Crickley Hall This ghost story from beyond the pond toggles regularly and frequently, without notice, across the pale between Then and Now.

Mixed idioms are intentional. Then is at a private orphanage in Devon, at a time when children were bused from London to escape The Blitz.

Primeval's Douglas Henshall plays the evil headmaster. We start out, however, in the Now. Mother "Eve Caleigh", played by Suranne Jones and her five-year old Son have a special, even psychic, connection.

Son disappears from the playground when Mother falls momentarily asleep. Mother is disconsolate for months thereafter.

Approaching the one-year anniversary of Son's disappearance, Father "Gabe Caleigh", played by Tom Ellis gets a job out west in the aforementioned Devon of the novel , and the family takes the opportunity to move, in hopes of escaping the sad memories at home.

The couple have two other children, both girls, one preschool; and the school bus which collects the older one for classes is labeled, "Manchester", per the location of filming.

Once ensconced in the haunted house, Mother finds and reassembles a screw-driven toy top — like one I had as a child, but mine was less fancy than the one used here — and she uses it to reconnect psychically with her lost son, believing him to be still alive.

From here, she employs extraordinary means to find him, beset all the while by Henshall's haunting. This U. Note: This review is dated October 29 in my files, indicating the original scheduled airing in the U.

But what a farrago of old tosh! No chemistry between husband and wife, central casting creepy vicars two of them! Mustn't be totally negative - the two child actors were excellent - better than most of the adults.

In short, save your money! Oh I love this film. Watched it in bed and at times had to hid under the bed clothe's.

I have the book signed by the author which I have not read yet but a friend bought it for me and had it signed!

Many thanks. Excellent, really liked this. If you like spooky stories with good acting then give this a view.

I can't understand why there aren't more adaptations of his books. Load more international reviews. I've not read the book so can't compare it to that.

To be honest, after reading The Fog, this seemed a bit tame so am wondering how closely it DID follow the book.

I thought it was a good movie - acting was good, well-cast. Plot was a bit thin as there was no suspense to it. It was an enjoyable enough night in with so I would recommend it.

Watched it last night in one hit, I forgotten how good it was. Yet again the BBC pull out all the stops on this excellent drama.

Had me on the edge of the sofa most of the time. This article needs additional citations for verification.
